Employee Spotlight: Alexis Cardona

From triathletes to restaurant owners, Impel has some amazing employees in its ranks. We’re introducing you to a new employee every month as part of our Employee Spotlight Series, giving you an inside look at our charismatic culture. This month, we’re introducing you to Alexis Cardona, our desk-drumming, community-leading VP of Marketing.

What do you do at Impel?

I have the pleasure of serving as Vice President of Marketing for Impel since February 2019. Working at Impel in such a hyper-growth environment means you do it all, from the “strategic” to the tactical, every day! You roll up your sleeves and get in the trenches and work across all levels and functions. And I absolutely love it. I am so excited by our growth and what we’re building together.

Which core value resonates most with you?
All of them! If I have to choose, I’d probably say Relationships and Results. I thrive on collaboration and transparency and I need to feel like where I work and the folks I work with are a part of my family given how much time we spend together. Congeniality and fun are important to me, and I definitely see that in our SpinFam. As for Results, I love seeing success and ideas or strategies work beyond my expectations, and I am disappointed when they don’t! That usually makes me want to go at it again harder and better until we get it right – which maybe speaks to Grit or Energy.

What has been your favorite marketing initiative or project at Impel so far?
All of them! I love everything we do, from the most executional tactical email marketing campaign to our strategic brand design and positioning evolution, to the creation of a customer communications lifecycle program/process, to establishing a more consistent content marketing engine or an automated lead management process. Part of the beauty of working at Impel is that every single initiative matters to the business because we are growing so quickly and there is still so much opportunity ahead.

I’ll share one that most folks have never heard of…as a percussionist, I love Drumeo. It’s an online music instruction school. They have constantly practical content and short training/exercise/practice tips you can integrate into your day, shared by professional real-world working drummers and percussionists who are also great teachers. Real examples and case studies. They also provide a lot of interactive content for readers to engage with. Their paid content is excellent, but their free content is also very substantive and rich.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
The sclera of my eyes (the white part) is actually light blue. I have about 6,000 CDs or so. And toilet paper from the top, always.

You are very active in your community, even during this pandemic. Tell us how you’re giving back.
I try to remain active in the community, whether through my local church in meeting people’s physical or emotional needs, volunteering at places like the Rescue Mission, or donating time and resources to other local and regional charities. I’d love to do more! One of the blessings I’ve experienced during this Coronavirus pandemic has been the ability to help deliver meals to homes in need through the school systems. There are many families who depend on public schooling for meals and resources, and districts have done great work in ensuring those services continue uninterrupted even when schools are not physically able to operate. To be a part of that has been an amazing opportunity.

Studies show that listening to music at work can increase productivity. You’re always
drumming away on your desk, what are you listening to?
I will drum with my fingers often while thinking – and that can lead to some interesting dynamics on conference calls! I’ve been listening to music while working or studying since I was in elementary school, I think. Music is one of my great loves and my tastes are broad and varied. One day it could be jazz fusion or more traditional jazz like Chick Corea or Miles Davis, the next day it could be 80’s pop or classic rock, after that perhaps some Flamenco or Afro-Cuban songo or Brazilian bossa, and the next day it could be Killswitch Engage or Metallica. All in a day’s work!

We have a shared library at the office and a lot of big readers here. What’s the last book you read?
I am quite an avid reader, so there are three books I recently finished reading: John Hart’s “Redemption Road” (a great mystery thriller), Simon Sinek’s “Find Your Why”, and revisiting C.S. Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters.”

Alexis’ ever-changing playlist is just one of the many interesting things about him. We’re lucky to have him on our team! Follow us on the Impel Facebook and Impel Instagram pages for updates, you won’t want to miss next month’s spotlight on Impel Product Owner, Stephanie Donato.
